Deep Woods Estate

Margaret River Region

"When milk's not enough, drink Deep Woods wines" ... Old Jungle Saying!

Visit the Deep Woods Estate Web-site

Owned and operated by the Gould Family, Deep Woods Estate is hidden within a pictureque valley on the Cape Naturaliste Ridge in Western Australia's South West. The climate is perfect for growing premium grapes with cooling summer breezes from both the Indian Ocean and Geographe Bay.

The name of the winery derives from the Goulds' love for The Phantom. All labels for Deep Woods Estate wines are purple, and their logo is similar to The Phantom's good mark (the 4 P's replaced with 4 D's). Old Jungle Sayings occasionally find their way into their mailing list newsletter, which is appropriately titled The Chronicle. The history of the estate is also steeped with Phantom significance. The Gould's bought the property in 1992 from the Standish family. As you remember, one version of lore is that the first Phantom was a Sir Christopher Standish. The big wood sign at the front of Deep Woods Estate was made by a Mr Walker. The winery opened their doors to the public within days of the 50th anniversary of Frew's Phantom comic.

Deep Woods Estate produce a wide range of premium wines which demonstrate the typical characters of the Margaret River region. Tasting notes for their 1998 vintage are reproduced below. Click on the title to see an image of the corresponding bottle label.

1998 Late Harvest
The Late Harvest, made from Verdelho grapes is light and luscious, with tropical flavours reminiscent of melon jam. The sweetness of the wine is driven strongly by fruit flavours. A very easy drinking wine, to be enjoyed any time of the day.
$12 per bottle, $10 per bottle per carton.

1998 Verdelho
The proof is in the bottle with our most popular white wine. It is a very well balanced medium dry wine exhibiting both floral and ripe tropical fruit flavours. Enjoyed with most food, or on its own. It is especially nice with seafood.
$16 per bottle, $14 per bottle per carton.

1998 Sauvignon Blanc
Tropical flavours abound in this tasty little number. Goes extremely well with light curries and spice driven food.
$17 per bottle, $15 per bottle per carton.

1998 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc
This is a wonderfully intense wine, yet refreshing and crisp with lovely aromas of passionfruit and underlying citrus and gooseberry characters, giving a most appealing flavour with excellent mouthfeel.
$18 per bottle, $16 per bottle per carton.

1998 Semillon
The Semillon has been on oak for 6 months and has matured into a wonderful wine. The nose is quite floral yet the palate is grassy and herbaceous, coupled with that wonderful citrus flavour.
$19 per bottle, $17 per bottle per carton.

1998 Cabernet Sauvignon
With 15% Merlot, the wine has spent 12 months in French oak barriques, producing beautiful flavours of dark chocolate with the ever present blackcurrant, and there is a subtle underlying spearmint characteristic.
$19.50 per bottle, $17 per bottle per carton.

1998 Cabernet Reserve
The Cabernet Reserve has spent 18 months in new French oak barriques and has developed beautiful mint and chocolate characters with aromas of tobacco, blackcurrant and plum.
$30 per bottle, $27 per bottle per carton.

1998 Deep Red Shiraz
Lovely aromas of ripe berries, spice and hints of peppermint with lashings of rich dark fruit on the palate.
$22 per bottle, $19.50 per bottle per carton.
