Best Frew Cover 2002

The winner of the limited edition print of The Phantom by Antonio Lemos, courtesy of 99.94 Editions, is Aman King from New Delhi, India.

Antonio Lemos' cover for the 2002 Christmas Special (#1340) was without any doubt, the best Frew cover of 2002. It attracted more votes (58%) than all other covers combined! A clear message from voters was that Frew should improve the quality of their covers, and this cover was a perfect example of what can be achieved using Australian artists.

Antonio Lemos strived for something a bit different for the Christmas Special. He produced one of his rare painted cover designs, inspired by a panel from the Semic Classic The Ring (page 35, #1341), but with his own unique style. Some comments from voters:
"The cover projects the continuing mystery and power that is The Phantom."
"Classic style."
"Very effective. Eye catching, while remaining simple."
"It's a finely finished cover."
"The strongest symbol of the Phantom's power, the skull and a mean Phantom eager to help the underdog on the streets."

Antonio Lemos also produced many line-art covers for Frew this year and his Japanese-style Phantom cover for A Strange Land was particularly eye-catching. The same can be said for the "dark ages" imagery of the #1338 cover which Jim Shepherd constructed from panel artwork by Carlos Cruz (page 9).

This cover was another of Jim Shepherd's paste-ups from the beautiful panel artwork by Jaime Vallvé (page 20).
